Wolverines News · ‘Rines Win a Season-Ending Thriller! Allied Softball Finish Season 3-3-1

What a way to end the season! The ‘Rines started off hot, with scores by Timmy Cooper and Josefus Moyd in the first in addition to another run in the second. However, the Bulldogs responded with a vengeance, scoring 5 runs in the first inning and 3 in the second making the score 8-3. The ‘Rines offense came alive in the third, scoring 5 runs and backed by an excellent performance on defense, including a double play by the first baseman, Alex Chaurand, and outfield and infield fielding from Nate Yeboah and Lucia Charaund. Watkins Mill kept Churchill scoreless for the next three innings. Key hits by Maria Hainer and Nate Yeboah first tied the game, then gave the ‘Rines the lead. Things were looking good going into the last inning, with additional runs extending the lead to 16-8, including massive hits by Ryan Desoto, who drove both sides of the field, and Josefus Moyd–who bounced one above the pads, who also had an infield home run thanks to a great hit and savvy base running. Elijah Lamont doubled and also tried nearly a triple, and CJ Schwartz also had a 2 RBI single to extend the lead. Emre Banerjee also had an RBI. Thomas Bacorro showed excellent improvement, going 2 for 3 at the plate. However, Bulldog fighting spirit led to a last inning 7-run charge. With only 1 out and runners on first and second, the outlook didn’t look good–and that’s were the legend truly began. Staring down a solid stable of batters, pitcher Xyon Moyd didn’t crack under pressure. Even after another Bulldog single loaded the bases, the Wolverines stood their ground–focused as a team–communicating as a team–playing as a team. A short grounder back at the mound was field by Moyd, who made a leaping toss to catcher Maria Hainer. Even with a runner bearing down on her, she stood, gloved raised, and caught the ball for the out and sparing the chance for victory. Two outs, bases loaded, up by one—no pressure! The next Bulldog hit a grounder down the third base line. As the tying run approached home, brothers Xyon and Josefus made a lightning fast decision. Josefus ran back to third with the fielded ball, tagging the bag before the runner could get there—and before the tying run could cross the plate. ‘Rines WIN!!! What a great season for everyone. The Wolverines would like to thank the many parents, fans, and behind the scenes staff that make the wheels go ’round for our team. Your support is awesome, and as we look forward to next year’s season, we look to see YOU at The Mill.
